Teeth whitening your smile is great for enamel that is stained, dull, or discolored. Much of this discoloration comes from food particles in things like coffee, tea, berries, or even soy sauce. Other times, our teeth may absorb stains from the environment, medication, or even be naturally dark due to genetics, or antibiotics taken by our mothers while we were in utero. Age is another factor.
Unfortunately, stain isn’t something that can always be removed with good oral hygiene or more aggressive brushing. Even over-the-counter whitening toothpastes can be somewhat ineffective at making teeth more than a shade or two brighter. The abrasive products inside of them may even wear away your enamel.
Part of Your Smile Makeover
Certain types of stains can be lifted from your enamel, making the teeth look brighter, whiter, and more youthful. If we’re about to complete a smile makeover with veneers, crowns, bonding, or bridges, Dr. Paschal will likely recommend whitening your smile first. This allows us to match your new smile with the rest of the teeth that are visible. After all, it’s not possible to change the color of porcelain after it’s on your teeth!
What is the Best Teeth Whitening System?
Unfortunately, over the counter whitening systems are usually less effective than professional treatments. Their solutions are weaker, and the contact with each of your individual teeth may not be accurate.
Dr. Paschal recommends custom whitening trays for most of our patients. All we need is an impression! Each tray is precisely fitted to your smile, so that the prescription grade gel comes fully into contact with the entire surface of the tooth. Wear them for an hour a day for 2 weeks and see teeth that are several shades whiter. Plus, your brighter smile is easy to maintain!
